4 AMERICAN CLASSICS, 1 MACHINE

So it’s pretty clear by now that I’ve made more than enough attempts at difficult recipes, things that aren’t exactly realistic for a person who has a serious job, or someone who has a family, kids to pick up from soccer practice, or for a typical twenty-thirty something that works 9-7 and then goes out every night for happy hour. For me, these recipes are difficult, and there is so much research I have to do to find out about molecular gastronomy. But honestly, it is much harder to be creative when there are severe constraints on one’s time and space. I do realize that for most 20 somethings living in urban areas, one tends to deal with limited spaces in kitchens with little access to machines. It may not even be due to economic scarcity, one can still have money and not have the space to keep all these tools, but you understand what I’m getting at. Time and space, always two things we struggle with.
First things first, grocery shopping.

Street style alive: blowing in the wind

A mix of studded leather and floating sheer doesn’t just join toughness and femininity together in wedded bliss, it also makes for a billowy vision against the Paris wind. Against the bustle going on outside the Dior showing at Paris fashion week, Fashionising.com’s Allan Barger snapped this outfit which you can view in animated form after the break.

Alpha60′s new chapter of refinement

There’s an expectation of something mildly alternative, of the dark and potentially edgy, that comes with the Alpha60 name. Choosing to host their LMFF (L’Oreal Melbourne fashion festival) parade in Chapter Lane, the laneway that conveniently borders both their Flinders Lane store and St Paul’s Cathedral, couldn’t have been more apt. But this wasn’t a collection marked by gothicism, even as it marched the stone …

5 to buy: the perspex heel

Delicately engraved and diamante studded in the 50s, filled with fish and bravado in the 70s, championed by strippers in the 90s – the lucite heel has a past more colourful than many of its incarnations, but the new breed will inject a bit of fun into your footwork. From crystal clear slippers for the modern Cinderella at 3.1 Phillip Lim to Stella McCartney’s raspberry …

Bat shoes at Issey Miyake

They could be the kind of footwear you’d find on the feet of Morticia Addams, or some Tim Burton heroine. There’s an inkling of the famed bat symbol that calls the world’s darkest superhero to action. Whatever they make you think of, these shoes – spotted outside Issey Miyake’s show at Paris fashion week – have an undeniably Gothic allure.

Dark beauty: Interview with McQueen’s Sarah Burton

“There’ll always be a McQueen woman. She is a strong woman and she is a powerful woman, and when she puts a McQueen jacket on, she feels different. The way she stands is different. The way she moves is different. It’s almost like the clothes are slightly empowering.” — Sarah Burton Sarah Burton has impossible shoes to fill. Her collection for Alexander McQueen fall 2012 …

Black, white, and minimal: Cara Delevingne

Sleek cuts, minimal details, sharp shapes and blocks of monochrome hues: put these attributes together and you have a style synonymous with Calvin Klein circa 1990s. It’s a style that serves just as well today, a fact this shoot starring Cara Delevingne leaves no doubt of. Closely interlinked with the current incarnation of sporty fashion, the sharpest and sexiest way to wear the look now …

The Spirit of the Black Dress lives on

Say what you want about the black dress, but you can’t deny the importance it holds. It’s entry into the English language as the black dress is a dead giveaway: how many other items of clothing hold that status? The black dress is, collectively, an institution. This year the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival calendar sees the black dress rightly celebrated by 10 designers in The …

Tradition vs modernity: Indonesia’s big question

Indonesia fashion week just crossed the finish line of its inaugural event. A government-driven push to put Indonesia on the fashion map, it's an event underpinned by the need to balance the county's proud heritage with its ever-burgeoning modernity. So how are Indonesia's designers, and the event itself, taking on that task? Read on as we take a look.
